Nokalakevi is situated in the west Georgia - in Samegrelo (Mengrelia),
which includes the territory between Riv. Rioni, Tskhenistskhali, Enguri
and Black Sea. The main towns of Samegrelo (Mengrelia) are Zugdidi and Poti.
Mengrelia is situated in the territory of Georgia, which since VI century
B.C. was in the Georgian kingdoms: Cholchis (VI-II B.C.) Egrisi (IV-VIII
A.D.); Abkhazia (VIII-X cent.) and Odishi (XIV-XIX cent.). The Antique
cholchis kingdom's most important citiy Phazisi (Poti), the capital of
Egrisi - Archaeopolis (Nokalakevi), and Odishi rulership center - Zugdidi
were situated on the modern Samegrelo (Mengrelian) territory.
Samegrelo (Mengrelia) is rich with the architectural monuments of the different periods.
Among them there are: The Martvili Church (VII), The Cathedral of Tsalenjikha
(X), The Cathedral of Tsaishi (XIV), The Rukhi and Chakvinja Castles (XVII)
and etc.
The most important is the Dadiani's Palace (XIX) in Zugdidi, where is
a historical museum now. There are kept historical things of different
times, found in Samegrelo territory, there are also kept the christian
purities. They are: the arm of St. Marine, St. Kvirike's hand, the bone
of St. George, the bone of St. Joan the Baptist and St. Virgin's vesture.
Accordind to the foreign sources of XVII century, there were kept more
purities in mengrelia: the part of the Crist's Cross, several beard of
Jesus, the lash with which Crist was beaten, rope with wich Jesus was
roped, the parts of the Chrits's grave stone and St. Virgin girdle.
